About this machine
Leg extension gives the quadriceps focused work without needing to balance a bar or hold the torso in position. Use it when you want extra front-thigh work after a compound leg exercise, or when you need to compare control between sides.
Muscles worked
- Main load: quadriceps on the front of the thigh.
- Stabilization: trunk muscles and hip flexors help maintain the seated position.
- Should not hurt: knees or lower back. If it does, reduce the load and check the seat setup.
How to set up
- Sit deep in the seat with your pelvis and back against the support.
- Adjust the backrest so the knee lines up with the machine's lever axis.
- Place the roller on the lower shin, just above the top of the foot.
- Choose a starting range that feels comfortable and does not overstretch the front of the thigh.
- Hold the handles and start with a light weight to check the path.
How to perform
Main exercise: seated leg extension.
- Exhale and extend your legs forward and upward without lifting your pelvis.
- Pause briefly at the top, but do not snap the knees into lockout.
- Inhale and lower the roller slowly while keeping control of the weight.
- Keep your feet in a natural position; do not force the toes outward or inward.
- Stop the set when range or control starts to break down.
Common mistakes
- Using too much weight, which lifts the torso away from the backrest.
- Placing the roller on the foot instead of the shin.
- Misaligning the knee with the lever axis, creating extra joint pressure.
- Dropping the weight too quickly on the way down.
